FAQs and Safety Advice

Information about using our Sunbeds

Do you have to use creams?

Remove all jewellery and make up and take a warm shower if possible before using the sunbed to remove all cosmetics, perfumes, skin creams and lotions. Those preparations can increase the sensitivity of the skin in ultraviolet light. You should use our special UVA Tanning Cream with sunbeds. It contains a built-in tan accelerator, essential moisterisers and collagen. It is not advisable that you use any cream with an SPF (Skin Protection Factor) in it, as you would have to spend longer on your sunbed.

What about my skin 'drying up'?

Provided that tanning times are adhered to, a sunbed should not dry up your skin. However, it is recommended that you use the 'UVA Tanning Cream' mentioned above or a good moisteriser after each session.

What will happen if you fall asleep?

Nothing. The sunbed have timers which automatically switches off when your time has elapsed. Unlike other companies, our sunbeds have dual timers which provide added safety and conform to the latest EU legislation (2005). Beware of companies which do not provide the latest model sunbeds with this feature.

How often do I need to use the sunbed in order to maintain a tan?

This varies, depending on your skin type but, generally, in order to maintain your tan you will need to use the sunbed two or three times a week.

Do sunbeds fade the linen?

Not at all, but if you want to be certain place a towel on your bed.

Can I read while I am using the sunbed?

Ultraviolet light damages the naked eye, so we strongly recommend that you do not read while you are using the sunbed. We advise everyone to use the special protective goggles provided when tanning on a sunbed and not to look at the tubes with the naked eye.

Is the tan produced by a sunbed any different from the tan produced by natural sunlight?

The tubes on the sunbed emit a small percentage of UVB and a larger percentage of UVA. This causes the skin to react in precisely the same way as it would to natural sunlight. In other words, it develops a tan and also it becomes slightly thicker. There is absolutely no difference between the tan you get from a sunbed and the tan you get from natural sunlight: the pigmentation process occurs in exactly the same way. There is no such thing as 'sunbed brown'! The tan produced by the sunbed will also last just as long as the tan produced by natural sunlight.

Is tanning on a sunbed likely to cause skin cancer and age the skin?

If you use a sunbed sensibly it is actually healthier and safer than tanning in natural sunlight. This has been proven in numerous scientific studies.

Do sunbeds use a lot of electricity?

No. Your television set uses more power. The consumption of one of our sunbeds with 200 watt UVA tubes is approximately per tube per hour.

Do you install the sunbed?

Yes. The Sunbed Hire Company's prices include delivery, installation and collection. Our experienced and friendly staff members will set-up the sunbed wherever you would like it in your home.

Can I extend the period for which I am hiring my sunbed?

Yes. Simply give us a ring. We usually offer a discount rate for longer hire periods. You even have the option of purchasing the sunbed.

How to use a sunbed safely

Sunbeds are perfectly safe if used in moderation, gradually increasing the timings each day. Everybody's skin and it's tolerance to to sunlight varies enormously depending on several different factors. Skin type, previous history of sun or sunbed exposure and medications are the main considerations. If you have never used a sunbed before it can be difficult to judge your own tolerance; we always recommend that you take it easy for the first couple of sessions until you know how your skin will react. For most skin types a sunbed can be used every day but for people with particularly sensitive skin, or for those who have not been in the sun for some time, we recommend sessions every other day. No matter what your skin type, you should not use our powerful sunbeds for more than 10 minutes. If your have questions ask our delivery personnel and they will be pleased to advise you.

Please note: If you have been out sunbathing outside, please treat this as a sunbed session: do not use the sunbed that day. Goggles (provided for free) should be worn at all times.
